This book is the result of collaboration between the European
Commission, the Institute of Tropical
Medicine, Antwerp University and John
Snow International - Europe. The 17 chapters
review evidence in areas as diverse as historical
background and links with poverty and development;
technical strategies; constraints and problems
in delivering maternal care; cost; and policy
mobilization. Since publication in 2001 over
three and a half thousand books have been distributed,
and it has proved a useful resource to policy
makers, academics and practitioners. While there
are very few copies of the English version remaining,
the French version is still available.
To meet the continuing demand and for a wider dissemination,
JSI Europe produced a CD-ROM version of the book.
The CD-rom is user-friendly and is available in three
languages (English, French and Spanish). The translation
into Spanish was funded by DFID.
